„The Frost Witch” by Emberly Ash
BLURB
Witches are not born. They are made.
I died alone in a frostbitten forest. It was not heroic. I did not die defending an innocent or hunting to feed my loved ones. I died because I was stupid and cowardly. I died running away. And that would have been the end of my story. Until the witches found me and made me one of their own.
Outcast by her coven more than three hundred years after her resurrection, Koryn faces certain doom. Without her coven’s magic to sustain her, she will wither away to nothing. But earning back their trust means betraying the last living member of her family—the family whose downfall came at Koryn’s own hands.
Offered a bargain she cannot refuse…
Four hundred years ago, the gods sentenced the continent of Velora to death. Now Koryn must make a desperate final bid to save Velora—and herself—by passing each test posed at the Seven Gates. Nothing less will prove her worth to her coven or save her family.
To make matters worse, she finds herself bound against her will to Garrick the Red, a legendary bounty hunter with a secret that makes him not just her rival, but her bitter enemy. She does not need him to protect her—Koryn stands alone.
But when an adolescent dragon appears from the forest and declares herself Koryn’s familiar, her understanding of the world begins to shift. Koryn’s choices do not just affect her, but all the residents of a dying, desperate land.
Faced with a devastating choice…
For every gate she conquers, Koryn’s world grows more precarious. A deadly warrior turned bonded protector and forbidden lover. An adolescent dragon entrusted to her care. A powerful male from her past calling in a debt she is not ready to pay. And vengeful gods who demand their due, and force the frost witch to choose—her coven, her love, her dragon… or her soul.
MY OPINION
Excuse me?
Why is there so little hype about “The Frost Witch” in the bookish world?
What are you all even reading?
I found this book through the author and decided to give it a try — and wow. “The Frost Witch” took me on a rollercoaster from pure excitement to frustration. Why? That’s a long story. You’re better off discovering it yourself.
“The Covenants in Velora” is going to be a trilogy, and as I’m writing this review, I’m already reading book two — with very high expectations after that HUGE cliffhanger in “The Frost Witch”.
This book is insane.
We start with Koryn, who dies and is reborn as a witch. Living without her coven isn’t easy — especially since she doesn’t really fit the image of a cold, ruthless witch. She feels too much. She cares. And that makes everything harder.
During one dangerous situation, she saves a bounty hunter — and from that moment on, they become bound to each other. Now she has to pass through the Seven Gates to save Velora and redeem her sins.
Garrick the Red is that bounty hunter. At the beginning they don’t trust each other, they clash constantly, and the tension between them is there from the very beginning. But with every Gate, something shifts. Slowly. Gradually.
And when that slow burn finally pays off…
Oh. That scene.
Beautiful, passionate, intense — exactly what I needed.
But that’s not all.
Because if you think witches and fae are enough — you’re wrong.
We also get a dragon. And for now? She’s one big mystery.
“The Frost Witch” was such an unexpectedly good read. I was looking for gold — and found a diamond.
So why is this book so underhyped? It delivers so much more than many other romantasy books: a strong heroine, a compelling hero, a well-written plot, and tension that is absolutely addictive. Emberly Ash did an amazing job building the relationship between Garrick and Koryn.
The ending?
Give me a moment. I still need to process it.
If I didn’t already have book two, I would be mad AF.
That cliffhanger is brutal.
But right now, I’m already deep into “The Halfling Prince”, so… I’ll survive.
Do I recommend it?
Of course.
If you love fae, dragons, witches, and a really well-written story — “The Frost Witch” is definitely for you.
